so·ci·e·ty (sə-ˈsī-ə-tē) n., pl. so·ci·e·ties. Abbr. soc., s., S. 1. a. The totality of social relationships among human beings. b. A group of human beings broadly distinguished from other groups by mutual interests, participation in characteristic relationships, shared institutions, and a common culture. c. The institutions and culture of a distinct self-perpetuating group. 2. An organization or association of persons engaged in a common profession, activity, or interest. 3.a. The rich, privileged, and fashionable social class. b. The socially dominant members of a community. 4. Companionship; company. 5. Biology. A colony or community of organisms, usually of the same species.
That is what we are. We are a group of human beings broadly distinguished from other groups by our mutual interests, that of the American ‘Pit’ Bull Terrier. An organization or association of persons engaged in a common interest, the history, heritage, and ancestry of our chosen breed. We share in our companionship and company of one another, the subjects relating to the history of our breed based on and concerned with the events of that history, that we consider important or famous within that history.
The Purpose of the American Pit Bull Terrier Historical Society is to research, verify and record for future generations the history of the American 'Pit' Bull Terrier and the breeders, owners, and fanciers that were dedicated to their preservation.
To develop, provide, and maintain avenues whereby this history shall be made accessible to the members of the American Pit Bull Terrier Historical Society, thereby insuring that such historical information shall not be lost through time or lack of reverence, but rather preserved for the education and enjoyment of others for years to come.
The American Pit Bull Terrier Historical Society and The Registry has been in formation for many, many years. In depth research began in 1979. The Charter Members that assisted the effort in the early formation were men like Pete Sparks, Joe Orday, Louis Colby, Howard Heinzl, Joe Beal, Dean Plemmons, Ed Crenshaw, Kenneth Gordon, B.J. Dickinson, Howard Teal, Lester Hughes, James Crenshaw, George Long, Frank Jacobs, Joe Medlin, Bert Clouse, Jack Kelly, Don Mayfield, and many, many others. It was through their own years of experience, dedication, and contributions to the breed and the fraternity that made the American Pit Bull Terrier Historical Society possible. These men are some of the true corner stones of the breed, and without them, the formation of the American Pit Bull Terrier Historical Society would have been impossible.
It is our intent to preserve that history as best as we possibly can for those that have the heart to face the future, whatever it may hold, for the sake of preserving the greatest breed of dog on earth.
